Mosquitoes and EEE Virus

Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) poses a significant threat as a rare but severe mosquito-borne viral disease that impacts both humans and horses. The virus is transmitted primarily through the bite of infected mosquitoes, particularly species of mosquitoes belonging to the Culiseta, Coquillettidia, and Aedes genera.

Here's how mosquitoes are involved in the transmission of EEE virus:

  1. Mosquitoes as Vector: Certain species of mosquitoes act as vectors for the EEE virus, meaning they can become infected by feeding on infected birds and then transmit the virus to humans and other susceptible hosts when they bite.
  2. Bird-Mosquito Cycle: In the natural transmission cycle of the EEE virus, birds serve as the primary reservoir hosts. Mosquitoes become infected with the virus when they feed on infected birds. Infected mosquitoes can then transmit the virus to other birds, mammals (including horses and humans), and occasionally other vertebrates through subsequent blood meals.
  3. Amplification and Transmission: In areas where the EEE virus is present, mosquitoes can amplify it by transmitting it among bird populations. This cycle continues as mosquitoes feed on infected birds and then bite other birds or mammals, spreading the virus within the ecosystem.
  4. Human and Equine Infections: While humans and horses are considered dead-end hosts for the virus (meaning they do not contribute significantly to its transmission cycle), they can become infected if bitten by an infected mosquito. Infections in humans and horses can lead to severe neurological symptoms and, in some cases, death.

Given the role of mosquitoes in transmitting the EEE virus, mosquito control measures are essential for reducing the risk of transmission to humans and animals. These measures may include:

  • Source reduction: Eliminating or reducing mosquito breeding habitats, such as stagnant water sources, by draining standing water or using larvicides.
  • Mosquito surveillance: Monitoring mosquito populations to identify species that may carry the virus and tracking virus activity in mosquitoes.
  • Adult mosquito control: Implementing targeted insecticide applications to reduce adult mosquito populations in areas where virus activity is detected or where human or equine cases have been reported.
  • Personal protection: Encourage individuals to use mosquito repellents, wear protective clothing, and avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito feeding times to reduce the risk of mosquito bites.

Overall, understanding the role of mosquitoes in the transmission of the EEE virus is crucial for implementing effective control and prevention strategies to mitigate the risk of infection in humans and animals. For immediate assistance with your mosquito problem, contact us today.
